Last week, for the first time in over 7 months my wife and I met up on a beach in Wales with my two daughters, their partners, and our two grand-daughters.
As we walked along the beach it was a time to chat and laugh and catch up on lost time.
Our youngest grand-daughter, born in the first Covid lockdown last year has just turned one and our eldest grand-daughter had turned three in the latest lockdown. It was so good to be together again……at last!
And whilst we walked and chatted there was a moment to reflect on the past 15 months. As a family, and as some many other families have found, we’ve become more protective of each other.
We’ve used technology to keep in contact and keep up with the changes we’ve all experienced through this socially distanced time. The biggest changes are evident in our grandchildren as they change so quickly at this age and whilst we have been able to provide a ‘support bubble’ for our youngest grand-daughter Suri, we have lost precious time with Edie. Now though, we had a time to catch up on some of that lost time.
So on this day in May, 3 generations of our family took the time to reconnect and find our ‘new normal’. Fortunately, none of us have suffered any Covid related illness and as a grandparent one of the things I am happiest about is the security of knowing that if anything had happened to any one of us present on that beach last week, our affairs are in order.
We all have Wills.
We all have protection for our families.
Our grandchildren have guardians appointed to look after them, should they ever be needed.
It’s a reassuring feeling for me and I’m grateful that we have these aspects of our lives sorted.
But one gift I wasn’t expecting to come away with following our reunion was a cold……..thanks Edie. It’s nice to know some things haven’t changed and my granddaughter can still pass on an unwanted present. What a joy!!
